Bernie Sanders vs Donald Trump Persuasive Speech
Every
four years something monumental happens in our country.
I am not referring to
leap year, I am talking about voting for a president of the United States.
As
first year students in college we are now able to vote for the next person to
run this country!
Recently in my philosophy class, my professor asked who
everyone was thinking about voting for, and I was shocked to find out that over
half of the class said they would not be voting.
Us college students are some
of the most important people in this nation currently.
We have the opportunity
to become the next generation of doctors, lawyers, teachers, or even engineers.
That is another reason why it is so important that we vote this coming
November.
As we are becoming the next generation we need to pay attention to
the candidates and their views because one of them will be elected to be the 45th
president of the United States.
I know some of you might feel like your vote
doesn’t matter but think of all the people who came before us who fought for us
to even have the right to vote.
Think of how this nation is democratic for a
reason, because it is for the people.
As soon as I turned 18 I registered to
vote and I was anxious to find out who would be running for president.
I was
quite stunned to find out there was a candidate who shared all the same views
as me.
I am going to inform you all on how Bernie Sanders is a better candidate
for the United States Presidency than Donald Trump by first discussing his
views on taxes and abortion, second presenting his views on war, equality and the
income and wealth inequality in this nation and third discuss how Bernie is a
mature candidate that believes in climate change.
First,
Bernie Sanders has an intelligent view on taxes and abortion.
Sanders policies
would demand the top one percent and the large corporations to pay their fair
share of taxes.
Bernie states “As president, I will stop corporations from
shifting profits and jobs overseas to avoid paying taxes. I will tax Wall
Street speculators who caused millions their jobs, homes, and life savings. I
will tell the billionaire class: You cannot have it all while children in this
country go hungry.”
The new tax bracket that Sanders proposes would continue to
tax the people who make over $500,000 instead of the system we have now where
if you make $500,000 or $5 million you get taxed the same.
Bernie would also
slowly raise the minimum wage to $15 and support working women’s pay equity.
He
also would reestablish the Glass-Steagall act, which would prevent the banks
from becoming to big to fail again.
Donald Trump when asked about taxation
simply states, “Cut taxes by $10 trillion and the economy would take off like a
rocket ship.”
Trump does not acknowledge the top one percent or the large
corporations, possibly because he is apart of them.
On the topic of abortion Bernie
states, “The decision about abortion is a decision between a woman and her
doctor to make, not the government.”
Trump recently said that “Women who seek
abortions should be subject to some form of punishment.”
Then when his response
was taken the wrong way he changed his statement to the doctor who performs
the procedure if abortion was illegal should face some form of punishment, not
the woman.
Now that I have covered the serious topics of taxes and abortion I
will discuss the important subjects of war, equality and wealth and income
inequality.
Second,
Bernie Sanders’ views on war, equality, and income and wealth inequality are justifiable.
Bernie’s view on war is that “we are not the policeman of the world and that
war should be thought of as an option but specifically as a last resort.”
Bernie voted against the war in Iraq because he felt that it would destabilize the Middle East, which it did.
Trump believes that to “get rid of ISIS quickly we must bomb the oil and take the oil.” On June 16th 2015 Trump said, “don’t hit Iraq” then on June 28 he said to “bomb the oil fields.”
Trump states that, “he would hit them so hard and so fast that they would not know what hit them.”
On the issue of equality Bernie Sanders participated in the Freedom Rides in the 60’s.
He also led the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Commission (SNCC) and has scars from Selma.
In 1962 there is a picture of Bernie Sanders being arrested for protesting segregation.
He was also apart of the 1963 March on Washington.
He was apart of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and during his first year at The University of Chicago he and some friends realized that some off campus housing was refusing to let black students rent there.
Sanders organized a 15-day sit-in to protest it and they got the president to re-evaluate student housing.
Donald Trump has become famous for saying how he “Will build a great, great wall on our southern border and make Mexico pay for it.”
Trump also has been quoted saying “Mexico’s leaders have been taking advantage of the United States by using illegal immigration to export crime and poverty in their own country.”
On another occasion Trump was asked if he thought there was a Muslim problem to which he replied “Absolutely yes. In fact I said I didn’t see Swedish people knocking down the World Trade Center.”
On the topic of wealth and income inequality Bernie says “There is something profoundly wrong when the top 1/10th of the 1% owns almost as much wealth as the bottom 90%.”
Bernie continues on to say “There is something profoundly wrong when 58% of all new income since the Wall Street crash has gone to the top 1%.”
Bernie Sanders wants to make tuition free at public colleges and universities because he believes that everyone should be able to go to college regardless of income.
Sanders also proposes to expand Social Security by lifting the cap on taxable income above 250,000 to avoid the senior poverty rate from going up any more.
Did you know that 3 out of the 4 largest financial institutions in this country are 80% bigger today then when we bailed them out?
Well Bernie would break up the huge financial institutions so that they would no longer be too big to fail.
Donald Trump would just focus on bringing jobs back to America but does not have a specific plan nor does he address how the system is rigged to benefit a few while keeping everyone else stagnant.
I have discussed the topics of war, equality and wealth and income inequality and will now talk about maturity and global warming.

Third,
Bernie Sanders is a mature candidate who believes in climate change.
Anderson Cooper asked Trump why he would tweet out an unflattering picture of Heidi Cruz, Ted Cruz’ wife next to Melania, his wife and he stated “I didn’t start it” the same argument a five year old would give.
Trump has also been quoted saying, “Obama doesn’t have a clue. I would say he’s incompetent but I don’t want to do that because that’s not nice.”
Trump is notorious for name-calling and making vague statements about his plans for the United States if he were to become president.
Unlike Bernie Sanders who actually provides methodical responses of his plans for our nation.
If Trump is handling disputes while only running for president in this manner, just imagine how he would handle disagreements with other countries if he became president.
Bernie Sanders understands that climate change is the single greatest threat facing our planet.
Bernie believes “Right now, we have an energy policy that is rigged to boost the profits of big oil companies. CEO’s are raking in record profits while climate change ravages our planet and our people-all because the wealthiest industry in the history of our planet has bribed politicians into complacency in the face of climate change. Enough is enough. It’s time for a political revolution that takes on the fossil fuel billionaires, accelerates our transition to clean energy and finally put people before the profits of polluters.”
Donald Trump when asked about climate change states, “I believe it goes up and it goes down. So I am not a believer and I will, unless somebody can prove something to me, I believe there’s weather. We have much bigger problems.”

I hope that you all will make sure you vote this November and more importantly vote for a candidate who shares the same views as you because they will be running this country for the next four years.
